What is a good measurement strategy?

A good measurement strategy has to answer many questions: Where? Why? What? Who? When? How? If your business goal is to increase sales, then we can translate that into multiple questions that will provide you with answers. 

 

 

  1. Which pages or products lead to conversions? What quality are those conversions? 
  2. Why do people convert? Are there specific points where people turn back?
  3. What do people do, read, click on, put in a basket (or start a form), buy (or finish as a lead)? What makes people leave, churn, stop a subscription? 
  4. Who visits the website, what demographics, interests, search patterns, locations and browsers do they have? What is significant about them? 
  5. When do they visit and buy/convert during the day, week, month or year? Are there patterns to follow? 
  6. How should we react or anticipate the needs of the audience, and provide better content to nudge them towards the business goals? 
How does good measurement lead to better business results?

You can only improve what you can measure. But if you measure everything, you won’t have enough time and resources to analyze everything and make improvements. So a good measurement system should align to your goals and your ability to make improvements. A good measurement system should also warn you, if something goes wrong.
